About Wolfenstein Game Review

Video games aren't exactly very innovative sometimes as, when they find a theme they can exploit, developers usually try to run it dry then abuse it some more before migrating to the next “cash cow.” Such is the case with World War II titles, which have appeared ever since the invention of fairly complicated games. It seems that most shooter fans have shot more Nazis than all of the soldiers who participated in that historic conflict.

Among the franchises that made WWII their home is id Software's Wolfenstein. After achieving cult-like status thanks to various titles made for the PC, running on DOS and other older systems, the series is back with the simply titled Wolfenstein, which was released as a joint effort between multiple studios including id or Raven Software and published by Activision. Main character B.J. Blazkowicz is back once more in this game that acts as a sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and he needs to kill some more Nazi soldiers in order to stop their nefarious plans.

But while this title is one of the first to break the summer drought in terms of games, has it lost its shine after so many other iterations abused World War II? Has the big number of studios involved ruined the whole concoction or has B.J. reached his physical prime? Read on to see our review of Wolfenstein for the PC.

The Witness Watch Combines Old and New Technology

Here’s an odd concept design for those of you that can’t stand to carry around a normal watch. It may look like an extremely modern watch, but it takes a design cue from much older technology. It’s meant to resemble the very old sun dials. Something that most people couldn’t read now to save their life, even if some do use them for decorative purposes out in the garden. For those of you that can’t read a sun dial, you might want to start practicing before you seek something like this out.

The watch was designed by Hay Heun, who apparently enjoys making people’s heads ache every time they are itching to discover the time. Actually, after glancing at the examples of the face of the watch and the times listed underneath them, it wasn’t that difficult to understand how it works. It just might take you a couple of extra minutes when you glance at it to figure things out. It’s no worse than a watch that conveniently leaves out any numbers.

‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: Movie Review

Cast: Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Simon Pegg, John Leguizamo
Direction: Carlos Saldanha
Genre: Animation/ Comedy
Ratings/4 stars

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs lives upto its expectations and is as entertaining as its previous instalments, the superb 3-D animation serving as the perfect icing on the cake.

Addition of interesting new characters, a story that is light hearted and sweetly funny, just the right amount of drama, exceptional 3-D animation makes Ice Age 3 a perfect adventure film for a family to watch together. Contrary to many who believe the film has a target audience of below 10 year olds, it’s actually a film that will make all age groups smile.

Coming to the story, Mammoths Manny (Ray Romano, impressive as ever) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) are now all set to start a family of their own. The two are expecting their first child and even build a playground for their child! This is the time when Diego a saber-toothed tiger who is Manny's best friend realizes its time for him to move on from the group as he’d now be a loner anyway. Sid (John Leguizamo), the sloth too feels left out and thus decides to have a family of his own. Just wandering around, he discovers three huge eggs and without thinking twice decides to raise whatever comes out of it as his children, given the title it doesn’t surprise you to see baby Dinosaurs getting out of the hatched eggs! Sid now proud of being a single parent takes care of the Dino-babies but his parent-hood only lasts for a day as the kids’ Dino-mother soon comes hunting for her children. Sid is in no mood to give up on the babies he had just found and so is the mother who gave birth to them. Sid thus gets dragged into a Jurassic Park like Dinosaur dominated region and needs to get out of it in order to stay alive. Manny, Ellie and Diego now set on a mission to save their friend Sid from the clutches of deadly Dinosaurs but not without the help of dashing one-eyed weasel named Buck (Simon Pegg) who helps them get through to Sid.

This adventure animated film keeps you smiling but not the kind where you will fall off the chair. It’s a simple story told sweetly with the help of light humour. The introduction of new character ‘Buck’ makes the film really interesting. The message sent across of taking your family along no matter where you go also touches your heart.

This one’s a perfect weekend family watch...Do not miss it.

Movie Review: Pink Panther 2

Cast: Steve Martin, Andy Garcia, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Direction: Harald Zwart
Genre: Comedy
Rating: /1.5 stars
Barring 2-3 genuinely funny scenes, Pink Panther 2 is nothing but a compilation of juvenile jokes that try too hard to make you laugh but end up as nothing but a display of pure idiocy by the film’s central character Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Steve Martin)

When priceless treasures from around the world get stolen, including the Pope’s priceless ruby ring, Britain’s Magna Carta, the Japanese imperial sword, the Italian Shroud of Turin and the French Pink Panther diamond, the French government assigns Clouseau and a team comprising of international detectives to look into the matter and get hold of the diamond back.

The team is called Dream team and they set out on a journey to track down the Tornado (the so-called thief) who leaves his name behind every robbery he indulges in.

Thus enter Andy Garcia from Italy, Alfred Molina from UK, Yuki Matsuzaki from Japan to lend their expertise to this case and joins them later is the ‘I want to look stunning’ Sonia (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan).

Will the Dream team be able to get hold of the Tornado?

Apart from Andy Garcia (impressive), nobody else gets enough screen time and in a way its fine because their characters are not good enough to be allocated that sufficient screen time either!

Ash disappoints as the actress seems too busy admiring herself more than anything else. She looks least interested in the happenings, seems aloof and more concerned about her accent than focussing on the scenes. She tries hard to portray her seductress role but fails as her looks seem just average and body unpleasantly plump!

Steve Martin lets you down with his stupid antics that might be appreciated by kids but definitely not adults. His wannabe French accent fails to evoke laughter too!

The mystery element fails to hold your interest and so does the film. A Dream team is needed to detect what went wrong with this film and why was it aimed at those who find ‘foolishness’ funny!

‘Bride Wars’: Movie Review

Cast: Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway
Direction: Gary Winick
Genre: Comedy/ Chick-flick
Rating: /photo.cms?msid=4645880

Bride Wars is a film that is bound to take you by surprise because it is not all that cheesy as its title. Of course there are those regular ‘chick flick’ ingredients (read gossipy bitchy women indulging in catfights) in it but at the end of the day the film entertains so what the heck.

Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Hathaway) are best friends since childhood. Liv’s dominant and outgoing while Emma’s sensitive and subservient. The differences in their personalities and love for each other bind them together until they find out they are to get married on same day, at same venue!

Liv and Emma dream of getting married at the Plaza since childhood. Though all their life they share common friends, common engagement days, they are against getting married at the common venue on a common day. This all happens because of their wedding planner’s clerical error! Their respective spouses suggest a double wedding but the two best friends turn down the suggestion and prefer humiliating each other instead by trying every possible trick that could go against the other’s wedding.

Liv makes Emma’s skin go orange while Emma dyes Liv’s hair blue, Emma gatecrashes Liv’s bachelorette party and steals her thunder while Liv starts a rumour that Emma is pregnant... all this a week before their wedding. Their embarrassing pranks played on each other are neither funny nor engaging. What sets the film apart is the character sketch of its protagonists and the supporting cast’s performances.

Emma’s paid ‘maid-of-honour’ and her bitchy sarcastic comments on Emma, Liv’s dominance failing to overshadow the vulnerable girl hidden inside, Emma’s incapability at changing her true forgiving self... women bored of their marriage, single women bored of their loneliness... the characters are identifiable and cute.

Kate Hudson looks gorgeous but does nothing more than what she has done before and ditto with Anne Hathaway. No complaints as the actresses suit the characters they play.

The friendship between the two which has shades of jealousy, love, envy, insecurity all in one makes the film look real in spite of its juvenile supposed funny moments. Watch it to get entertained and take your best friend along!

‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’: Movie Review

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds
Direction: Gavin Hood
Genre: Sci-Fi
Rating: /photo.cms?msid=4677460

One of the most highly awaited films of the year, X-Men Origins Wolverine comes short of pleasing especially those who’ve loved the first two films in the series.

As the title suggests, the latest of the X-Men instalments is a prequel to Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000) thus showcasing the back-story of its most popular mutant Wolverine.

The film is a story of how the man Jack Logan became a steely clawed mutant Wolverine. The film begins in 1845 when Jack Logan in his early childhood realizes he possesses retractable claws made of bone that emerges from in between his knuckles when angered. Logan and his half brother Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber, impressive) who too possesses claws which emerge from his nails, thus decide to use their power to fight in America’s umpteen wars as they grow up. Their special powers don’t go unnoticed as General Stryker' (Danny Huston) offers them to join his special force of Mutants in order to fight the bad guys. The two brothers join the group but their differing moral values results in their fall-out.

Logan moves on and away to lead a peaceful life in Canada with his school-teacher girlfriend leaving Victor feel abandoned. Victor joins hands with Stryker to jointly invent Weapon-XI, an indestructible weapon that will have the best qualities of every mutant. Victor now needs Logan to complete his invention and thus kills his girlfriend to get him back in the trap. The incident leaves Logan traumatised and hungry for revenge. Logan’s vengeance readies him to go through an operation that transforms him to a metallic clawed indestructible Wolverine who needs to finish those who killed his girlfriend. The operation is conducted by Stryker which Wolverine soon realizes is for his own selfish motives with no intention of helping the latter.

Wolverine will now have to battle it out with Victor and Weapon-XI to avenge his girlfriend’s death.

X-Men has its share of high-octane action as one would expect from it but lack of originality and excess of cliché leads to disappointment. The story, treatment, characters, injection of pathos in the script... everything seems generic, including the hyper sensitization of the film’s main character Wolverine.

The glamour surrounding the metallic clawed brooding mutant comes from his character which is detached from all human emotions. The film on the contrary overshadows his animal instincts and anger by humanly feelings to make him look a hero which doesn’t work. The mellowed down good hero thus himself gets eclipsed by the villain Victor, portrayed well by Liev Schreiber.

Hugh Jackman has worked on his body which shows but the body muscles don’t hide the forehead lines and facial wrinkles that never leave his perfectly handsome face as he keeps frowning, grunting and sulking throughout the film. Wonder if it’s the acting or ageing...

This is bound to disappoint Hugh whose previous film Australia too didn’t go down too well with his fans.

This ones X-tra sensitive instalment of the X-Men series... you can afford to X-cuse yourself from watching it.

Night at the museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: Movie Review

Cast: Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Hank Azaria, Robin Williams
Direction: Shawn Levy
Genre: Action/ Adventure
Rating: /photo.cms?msid=4812272

If you are really tensed with your day-to-day mundane busy life and need to take a breather, Night at the museum 2 is your movie. If you have already seen the original Night at the Museum (2006) you’d know what to expect from the sequel and even if you haven’t, let us enlighten you on it by making it clear it’s quite a no-brainer yet a cute one time watch. For those who are fond of History, this one’s quite a rib-tickling comedy for you.

Night at the museum: Battle of the Smithsonian takes off where the original ended with some new characters added to it. Larry (Ben Stiller) is no more a security guard at a museum, he is a success. He is a rich inventor who sells his products on TV infomercials. However, as the popular adage goes, money cannot buy happiness. Larry gets back into the guard uniform when he finds out that many of his exhibit buddies are being sent into permanent storage down in Washington D.C. Larry now has to barge into the Smithsonian museum, get hold of the Egyptian tablet and stop a new villain who has come to life in the museum.

The film is entertaining whenever the exhibits come to life with nothing much to do for Ben Stiller, although Stiller shares a good chemistry with Amy. Hank Azaria as villain Kahmunrah and Amy Adams as feminist Amelia Earhart deliver best performances. Amy Adams’ vocab, body language, gestures, expressions are all according to the era she is shown to belong and her sheer presence lights up the screen. The film drags a bit in the second half and few sequences seem repetitive.

Scenes where the cupids follow Adams and Stiller, Abraham Lincoln and Einstein come to life, Dinosaurs roar a la Jurassic Park and the rockets put up on exhibition in the space museum start firing are fun to watch. The film has no great
plot but gives the feeling of history coming to life and there lies its success.

Night at the museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is a juvenile cute comedy that will drive your blues away... Go visit this museum.

Terminator Salvation Movie Review

Film: 'Terminator Salvation'; Cast: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anton Yelchin; Director: MCG; Rating: ***

The fourth instalment of 'Terminator' series has hit the screens but without Arnold Schwarzenegger - though he makes a blink-or-miss appearance towards the end of the movie.

Set in the future, the film is about man fighting with machines to save the world from the grip of an enemy called Skynet, which is trying to wipe out every trace of humankind from earth.

What happens when man wages a war against machines? There is the clink of metal against metal, gun shots and explosions. Director MCG has packed enough thrilling stunts to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. There are a few scenes that actually make you jump up as the filmmaker doesn't give you enough time to think or absorb the turn of events.

The film is devoid of colour, but the director has created space for emotions with the help of Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays the hero John Connor's (Christian Bale) pregnant wife, and Moon Bloodgood, who falls in love with a machine. However, he has ensured that the emotional scenes are not too many.

While Schwarzenegger played the saviour in the first three series, Christain Bale takes the responsibility to save humankind as the leader of human resistance in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles in the fourth instalment.

The film opens with circa 2003 -- where we see Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) donating his body to Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter). The film then takes a leap and lands in 2018 where Los Angeles has turned into a junkyard, with no sign of human civilisation but only debris, dead bodies and a chilling stillness.

Connor is all the while trying hard to resist his superiors from bombing Skynet station because he wants to save all those who are imprisoned inside.

Meanwhile, Marcus emerges from nowhere and reaches Los Angeles and it takes him a while to understand the situation.

Marcus is the only one who can help Connor in his mission to destroy Skynet base but the latter is not ready to trust him because Marcus is half human and half machine.

When James Cameron's original was released in 1984, it became one of the greatest action films of the decade. 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day', which came in 1991, managed to keep the interest alive. 'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines' came in 2003 and the fourth instalment takes the story forward.

With a spate of action thrillers coming to theatres, 'Terminator Salvation' might not have anything extraordinary to showcase, but its a good watch for action-lovers.

Christian Bale does a decent job, while Sam Worthington remains expressionless in most of the scenes ... just like a machine. Bloodgood, Carter and Howard pass muster.

Watch the film if you are a die hard 'Terminator' fan.

Actually, the movie takes you in the world of crazy and madcap where the hero Quick Gun Murugun (Dr. Rajendra Prasad) is a superhero. The movie depicts the war between good and evil. Quick Gun Murugun is a sincere cowboy who protects lives of common men. The epic battle between Quick Gun Murugun and villain Rice Plate Reddy begins from a small South Indian village to Swarglok and then finally to the cosmopolitan Mumbai.

Director Shashanka Ghosh deserve the credit for his choice of subject.

The negative part of the movie is too much use of Tamil. It will restrict the movie to Tamil dominated areas.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Nasser both are excellent in their character. Rambha has also made strong comeback to silver screen. Anu Menon has made justice to her character.

Other supporting characters have also been perfectly introduced.

In one sentence: Quick Gun Murugan is a delicious dosa to taste.
